The Playroom

PROJECT: NAVESINK

The Problem

This family had a playroom on the main floor that wasn't working. The shelving was inefficient, storage was limited, and everything was cluttered and hard to manage. Then a new baby arrived; and suddenly the problem wasn't just organization. It was safety. Older kids were deep into Legos and toys with small pieces, and having everything in one shared space was no longer an option.

At the same time, the family had a finished basement with a home theater they rarely used. The older kids had already started naturally migrating to the basement living area for Lego builds, spreading out across the floor because there was nowhere set up to actually do the work.

The space existed. It just wasn't set up for anyone.

BEFORE

The Solution

We created two distinct spaces; one for the big kids, one for the baby, each designed around exactly who was using it.

The basement became the big kid zone, with two areas working together. In the main living area, Lego storage drawers were organized by color and piece type so their son could build creatively and independently without hunting for what he needed. Display shelves were installed up high so finished creations could live safely out of reach from younger siblings. The home theater stayed a theater; but we added large storage drawers with bins inside and drawer units so toys were fully concealed when put away. It could function as a playroom without ever losing the feel of the space it was designed to be.

On the main floor, the original playroom was rebuilt around the baby. Inefficient shelving came out; better storage went in. A Nugget couch created a spot to lounge and read - and can transition into a soft play obstacle course gave their crawling baby somewhere to move and explore safely. Only age-appropriate toys and books stayed. The clutter cleared. The space finally made sense for the child using it.

AFTER

The Result

Two spaces that didn't exist before; both functional, both safe, both set up for the kids using them to navigate independently. As the baby grows and the older kids' interests shift, both spaces are built to adapt without starting over.

This was the first project we completed in this home. It wasn't the last.
